Default How Big is the Universe - 03-17-2009, 04:29 PM

I was wondering the other day, how do we know how big the universe is if we can't send people farther then the moon?
How do we know exactly how big our galaxy is or if there are other ones out there?

I'm just posting this to see what other people think on outer space.
Discuss.

i actually did some research on this.

here's what i found:

There are anywhere from 10 million to 1 trillion solar systems in a galaxy, and a galaxy is estimated to be between 30000 trillion - 3000000 trillion km in diameter each.

Scientists think there are more than 100 billion galaxies in the universe, so doing the math, that comes up to the universe having a diameter between 3 and 300 octillion km...

fucking huge... i know it's a HUGE range, but it's no bigger and smaller than that, and it's prob around 150 octillion km, which is 150 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000km

How do we know it can be that big though if we haven't sent something out that far?

Yes, it never ends, because it has no beginning o.O

No.. Lol, but Relentless is right. The universe is an ever expanding existence of matter. To give you an idea of how far we can see, it is about 14,000,000,000 (14 billion) light years in every direction. A light year is the distance that light travels in a single year. Now, note that I said: "Visible Universe." It is called this, because that is how far we can see, because light has not had enough time to travel to fill up all of the universe. This is because the universe is expanding at a faster rate than light can travel. Now, back to its size. I think the speed of light is around 180,000 MPS (Miles Per Second). Being that there is 31,556,926 seconds in a year, light will travel about 5,680,246,680,000 miles in any given year. This means, that the visible universe is about 79,523,453,520,000,000,000,000 miles across. I think I got my calculations right, and hope that everyone understands what I am trying to say. If my calculations were incorrect, someone please correct them.
